Got this mp3/cd player to replace a dying jensen cd player. Found that some of my burned cds (and a commercial one or two) will just not play in the player. It trys to read the disc and eventually gives up giving an “error 6″ message. (error 6 is “you put the disc in upside down, nitwit” error) Now, these discs all read fine in my other two cars cd players and on the house cd player. Kind of defeats the purpose of a cd player if “some” work and “some” don’t. If I figure out what’s causing this, like the player is dirty after being in the car for two weeks or whatever, I’ll update the review.

I was looking to replace the original radio/cassette deck in my ’85 Chevrolet pickup and didn’t want to spend a fortune. I did want an mp3 player and CD player. After looking at quite a few receivers in this price range, I settled on this Clarion. I knew the name. I also liked the clean look of the face with easy to identify buttons (simple operation).
Installation went well. Be sure to get the correct wire harness adapter for your vehicle along with a new faceplate if you need it. These will make installation MUCH easier. The receiver looks great and sounds even better. I’m still using the original speakers, which sound great with this unit. The photocopied instructions that came with the unit also included instructions on how to replace all the speakers in my pickup and how to install an external antenna (mine is embedded in the windshield).
Now for drawbacks. Though I was very careful when soldering the wire harness adapter to the receiver’s wire harness, the left and right speakers are wired backwards (it’s possible this was the case with the original receiver as well). It’s not much of an issue as once the balance is set, you never really mess with it again. The fader works correctly. The remote works fine, but isn’t full functioned. Also, it doesn’t have any way to attach it to a key ring or anything else so it tends to float around the cab (I think it has fallen behind the seat as I didn’t see it this morning). Finally, the LED display doesn’t like cold weather. There is a definite lag in the display when the receiver is cold. This is typical of LEDs in general and not limited to this receiver. Plus scrolling text never looks as good on 7-segment displays as it does on an an LCD matrix.
So, for the price I paid, I am very happy with this purchase and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good, basic receiver to update any older unit.

It was what I expected, but didn’t realize that it had not fader.
Anyway, it is a good product for the price paid.
